Modern Sitia is a port town with 10000 habitants at the east of Agios Nikolaos and northeast of Ierapetra. Sitia is the economic center of the east part of Crete with an active market, banks, airport and numerous public agencies. Sitia is a noticeable source of wealth mainly because of the export of agricultural products (olive oil, wine, fruits).
The Town of Sitia, though deserves more touristic attention due to the fact of its historical interest and the beauty of its nature, is far away from any serious mass tourism development. It keeps its genuine identity even though it can offer to the visitor quality entertainment and traditional Cretan hospitality.
