From the center of the village of Zakros, on the last footsteps of the international path E4, starts the hike of the famous Gorge of the Deads which ends near the Minoan palace in Kato Zakros.
In its walls there are numerous, huge or little caves in which were discovered tombs and finds of great archaeological importance from the Minoan period.
Archaeologists have reached the conclusion that the gorge was used by Minoans for fast transportation from Kato Zakros harbor to the mainland.
You can pass the gorge all year round except some rainy days in winter on which the gorge is transformed into a river.
The huge vertical walls of the canyon give the visitor a sense of awe. The highlight of the gorge is Castellas, a huge isolated rock on which are visible the ruins of a castle. It is obvious that it was a defending place from the attacks from the sea. From Castellas you have the best view of the whole canyon and it is a must for the visitor to walk all the way to the summit.
Goats and sheep are herding all over the length of the Gorge. The Deads’ Gorge is well signed, step by step marked and clean from branches and obstacles due to the efforts of the writer Elias Pagiannides, owner of Stella’s Traditional Apartments.
